Saturday, February 3. 2007It's spring!Spring is upon us here in Belgium, despite it being 45 days early. Trees are starting to grow new leaves, birds are building nests, and the weather this weekend has all the attributes of perfect spring days. It's at this point that I feel inclined to point out that I could have been wrong about it being winter in a previous post -- maybe winter was cancelled this year? Anyone who knows me knows that I'm prone to bouts of hyperbole. Anything can happen over the next month and a half, but it really does feel like spring. Allow me to explain; I was heading to the office this morning for some out-of-hours work cleaning up one of our server room/wiring closets with the network guy, and it really felt like a perfect spring day. Everything fit the pattern, including the small amount of frost, the nice blue skies, the faint smell of plants coming alive, the angle and colour of the sun through the smog. After talking with a few people about it, I've also found out that I'm not the only one believing it's spring. Magpies have been spotted building nests around Wavre, flowers are budding in Ixelles, and trees are growing leaves in Auderghem. Oddly, though, there's a deciduous tree at the office that still thinks it's autumn, as it's only just now starting to drop its leaves. Redeeming themselves since my previous weather related article, the IPCC have announced their Climate Change 2007 report which updates their previous assessment from 2001. This as-yet unpublished document purportedly puts a bleak and aggressive point across, hopefully putting a final end to the pathetic debate on whether climate change exists or not. The result so far is that the muppets in government are starting to wake up and smell the chlorofluorocarbons. Despite this, I doubt that California Assemblyman Lloyd Levine's How Many Legislators Does it Take to Change a Lightbulb Act has anything to do with environmentalism, and more to do with the fact that the Googleplex server farm may soon consume too much of California's precious electricity! Okay, so anyway... Trackbacks
